Growing up in a family where we automatically donated unused items, or traded clothing with our cousins, I never got to experience a true yard or garage sale. With the end of summer and fall quickly approaching I figured it was the perfect time of year to host one of my own. As old roommates moved out and new roommates began loading boxes in, it was the perfect time for all of us to clean out our rooms, extra closets and common areas to collect goods for the sale.
Although Hurricane Irene ruined our first attempt at the sale, we struck up shop again Labor Day weekend. I was fortunate enough to have a great team of friends to help me setting up shop and even donating a few items of their own. After a minor rain storm we ended the day with $130 in our pockets and a car load of extra stuff to take to GoodWill. It felt good not only cleaning out the house and making a few extra dollars for cleaning supplies, but also was rewarding to bring a bunch of stuff to donation as well.
